Advanced CanSkate Program
Qualifications: Passed CanSkate Stage 4 badge.
Description: The Advanced CanSkate program is a continuation of the CanSkate levels, but introduces the specific skills of figure-skating alongside basic skating activities. The format of the instruction changes to provide a bridge between the group-instruction format of the CanSkate program and the independent practice required of figure skaters. Skaters spend most of a session working with a coach, but are given short periods of unorganised time on the ice to they practice what they have learned on their own. Skaters must be able to work independently for short periods to benefit from this program.
Includes 1/2 hour group lesson and 15 minutes Stroking or Theatre. It is recommended that skaters to begin to have private (one-to-one) or semi-private coaching. 2 x 15 minutes free time is available for private coaching. Please contact the Coach of your choice directly for private/semi-private lessons.
- Please note that all skaters who have not passed Stage 5 must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet at all times on the ice, as per Skate Canada requirements.
- Report cards are provided at the end of each session identifying the Skaters progression, and areas requiring improvement. You are welcome ask your skater's private coach or the Advanced CanSkate coordinator about any points that are unclear on the report card. Please remember that all skaters progress at different rates, and only SkateCanada qualified coaches are authorised to judge when WTSC skaters have acquired skills to the required level.
Moving On to Higher Levels
Skaters leave the Advanced CanSkate program and move on to SkateCanada's STARSkate program when they have completed Stage 6 of the CanSkate program. The STARSkate program is where skaters develop their figure skating skills in freeskate, ice dance, skating skills and interpretative skating disciplines. On STARSkate A sessions they receive limited group coaching, and work with our coaches to develop their skating skills as well as a variety of life skills, including goal setting, focus, ability to deal with success and failure and time management.
